Expected loss ≈ (required turnover ÷ contribution rate) × house edge

That single formula is why a game’s advertised house edge can be misleading on its own. A very low house edge multiplied by a very low contribution rate can end up costing more, in expectation, than a higher house edge at full contribution. Using the $25 bonus / 40x / $1,000-requirement example from above, here’s how four common choices actually compare:

Turnover needed: $1,000 ÷ 100% = $1,000. Expected loss: $1,000 × 4% = $40.

Turnover needed: $1,000 ÷ 10% = $10,000. Expected loss: $10,000 × 0.5% = $50 — more expensive than the slot above, despite an eight-times-lower house edge, because the contribution rate more than cancels out the edge advantage.

Turnover needed: $1,000 ÷ 20% = $5,000. Expected loss: $5,000 × 1.06% ≈ $53 — the most expensive of the four in this example, combining a moderate house edge with a moderate contribution cut.

Turnover needed: $1,000 ÷ 20% = $5,000. Expected loss: $5,000 × 0.46% ≈ $23 — the cheapest option here, but only because the contribution rate in this example (20%) isn’t punishingly low. At a 10% or 5% contribution rate instead, this same low-edge game can easily become the most expensive of the four rather than the least. Video poker’s outcome depends more heavily on its specific contribution rate than almost any other category, precisely because its house edge is already so small that contribution dominates the calculation.

The takeaway isn’t “always play slots” or “always avoid blackjack” — it’s that both numbers, contribution and house edge, have to be checked together for a specific bonus at a specific operator before assuming which game is actually cheapest to clear it on.
